“Super-Grafts” to Treat Severe type 1

To save patients with a severe form of type 1 diabetes, pancreatic cell transplantation is a “last resort” treatment, because the process is long and complex, and many of the grafted cells die quickly. Researchers have found that adding amniotic epithelial cells to these cell clusters creates much more robust “super-islets” of Langerhans. Once transplanted, more of them engraft and start producing insulin much more rapidly. Read more
