Researchers studying a large group of people who had type 1 for 50 years found that 60 percent of the participants were affected by end-stage renal disease (ESRD). 72% had macroalbuminuria and 88% had microalbuminuria affected 72 and 88 percent, respectively. The researchers concluded that some form of kidney damage was universal in patients with long-term type 1 diabetes. Read more
