Many of the words we use to talk about people with diabetes carry a lot of baggage. Words like “diabetic” when applied to a person, “noncompliant,” and even “prevention” can convey judgements on people with diabetes. These judgements can affect the way people think about patients with diabetes – and can be extremely harmful when those judgemental thought patterns affect politicians and health care professionals.
